Biopac Student Lab

Important Note: It has come to our attention that some of our competitors have suggested to potential customers that their data acquisition systems are the only systems which (to their knowledge) are tested and compliant with IEC601-1 (Medical Safety Test Standards relating to Patient Leakage Current, Dielectric Strength, Creepage and Air Clearance).  This of course implies that Biopac systems are not tested, compliant or indeed human safe, which is simply not true.
All Biopac data acquisition and analysis systems and relevant amplifiers are human safe, fully tested and compliant with all appropriate and relevant European and worldwide standards for medical safety (Including: IEC601-1 Medical Safety Test Standards, EN60950:1992/A1 : 1993/A2:1993 Low Voltage Directive, EN55022:1997 / IEC801-2:1984 Electromagnetic Compatibility Directive).  Full details and copies of test certification and documentation are available on request.

Biopac Systems and Linton Instrumentation bring you the integrated solution for teaching physiology: The Biopac Student Lab.

What it does...

The Biopac Student Lab revolutionises how students learn physiology by eliminating complex set-up tasks and letting them focus on learning physiology. More than just a data recorder, the Biopac Student Lab is an integrated set of hardware, software, and documentation that guides students through a set of lessons which illustrate fundamental physiological principles. Lessons cover topics ranging from muscle contraction to cardiac activity to reaction time.

How it works...

Included with the Biopac Student Lab is a set of pre-defined software "lessons" which contain the information the Biopac Student Lab needs to collect data. This cuts set-up time by 90%, and reduces the amount of technical instruction required in the classroom. The familiar point and click interface also lets students concentrate on learning the content of each lesson, rather than just how to use a computer.

To run a particular lesson, just select it from a menu and click the mouse button. The software will automatically set up the screen display and initialise the hardware with the appropriate gain settings, sampling rate, and filtering. A separate text window guides students through the lesson every step of the way.

Students attach electrodes and transducers to themselves (or other students) as instructed by the lesson text window. The Lab Manual provides clear illustrations on how the electrodes and transducers are to be connected. Electrodes are easy to use, just peel and stick. Transducers are durable and simple to handle. Some transducers are handheld, others come with Velcroš straps for quick attachment.

The Biopac Student Lab is easy for students to use. The lessons are easy to follow and provide feedback to students. For instance, if students mistakenly plug in the wrong transducer, the lesson reminds the student to insert the correct one. Or, if students want to repeat a section in a lesson, they just have to press the redo button.

Students don't need to remember to save their data....the lesson will save all the students' files automatically and place them in a folder with the students' name. To see their data again, the student just has to double-click on their saved files.

You and your students will love the Biopac Student Lab's ease of analysis. Each lesson includes on-screen measurement tools which allow you to analyse data simply by clicking a mouse button. During the lessons you can stop and measure data to determine wave parameters like: Peak to Peak, Maximum, Minimum, Slope, Standard Deviation, Frequency, BPM, Delta Time, Mean, Area and Integral.

The Biopac Student Lab helps the student create high quality lab reports. The Biopac Student Lab Software prints high resolution graphs directly to your printer.

The Biopac Student Lab is available in the ULTIMATE, ADVANCED or BASIC configuration. The ULTIMATE system can perform all the lessons in the Lab Manual. The ADVANCED system will allow you to perform fourteen and the BASIC system will perform a subset of the Lab Manual lessons. The lesson descriptions indicate which system is required. If you have the BASIC or ADVANCED system you can purchase the Upgrade Kit, at a later date, to bring your system up to the next configuration.

Powerful Hardware...

Each Biopac Student Lab includes a Biopac Systems MP30 Hardware Unit. The MP30 is a high performance data acquisition system that is rugged, lightweight and easy to use. Electrode leads and transducers plug into the front of the MP30 unit and four auto-sensing amplifiers detect which type of electrode or transducer is being plugged into which channel. Real time digital filtering capability is incorporated into the MP30 so filters for different kinds of physiological data collection can be set very accurately.

The MP30 gets power via a low-voltage wall transformer. Optical isolation circuits protect the input channels to provide a high degree of electrical safety when connecting electrodes and transducers to subjects.

All factors related to data acquisition are under software control. To collect data, just plug the MP30 serial cable into the back of your Macintosh or PC and open the Biopac Student Lab program.

A Lab Manual is provided with the Biopac Student Lab and includes lessons which determine how the MP30 unit is configured. When you plug an electrode lead set or transducer into a channel during a lesson, the channel automatically sets the gain, baseline and filtering range for that particular measurement.

You can customise the MP30 Hardware Unit configuration using the Biopac Student Lab Pro Software. You can measure up to four channels simultaneously, and physiological inputs can be mixed and matched (see the Biopac Student Lab Pro).

Easy to use...

The Student Laboratory System comes complete with 17 built-in lessons, each placing a special emphasis on learning physiology. The lessons are supported by our on-line text system that guides the student through from start to finish. This is not a help menu, but a detailed series of instructions that complement our Laboratory Manual. It is always on screen and instructs the student from start to finish. For example, if the student attempts to start a lesson with the wrong transducer the software will warn them, if they try and run a lesson with the power turned off, the system will advise them. All our transducers come with a smart sensor which tells the hardware exactly what type of transducer is connected.

No programming...

The system comes complete with the 17 lessons that require no additional programming. We don’t expect you to have to generate your own lessons, unless you want to of course. You can run all of our lessons straight from the box, there is no additional programming or set up required. The lessons will provide the student with the appropriate tools to record a particular physiological parameter, whether that be an X, Y plot or a chart recorder display, the system has it all taken care of.

The lessons will guide a student through from a very basic level. For example, our ECG lessons will include the following elements: lead II ECG, Einthoven triangle, on-line rate calculations and then comparing the relationship between the pulse and the ECG. By the time the student has completed the ECG lessons they will have a thorough understanding of the different lead configurations and how to analyse ECG data. This format is used throughout the 17 lessons, so the learning curve is very short.

Results...

Each student is asked to enter their name at the beginning of the lesson. This automatically creates a folder, in their own name, where the data is stored. This prevents any confusion when a group of students are all using the same system for the same lesson. They can then analyse their data using our Review Saved Data Mode. We allow you to take multiple copies of the lesson software to allow students to analyse their results on a different computer. This eliminates the problem of having the Student Laboratory System hardware tied up unnecessarily while students analyse their data. The student can then print out sections of their data and take a variety of measurements. The measurements can be entered into the on-line Journal facility for further analysis. The Journal file can be printed and the results can be handed in with the graphical printouts, as part of the course work.

Advanced users...

If you want to generate your own lesson templates or use the system for your own research purposes we have the PRO software. The PRO software converts the Student Laboratory System into a four channel data acquisition and analysis system. It gives you all the power of a fully fledged research machine, providing you with the best of both worlds. The ultimate teaching system and a hard core research tool.

Utilise existing equipment...

Even though the Student Laboratory System comes complete with all the transducers and electrodes necessary to run each of the fifteen lessons you can still use your existing transducers. We can provide you with connector interface kits that will allow you to use your current equipment with our system. This can save a great deal of money and also increase the flexibility of the system.

Value for money...

This is the best part. The Student Laboratory System with its four channel data acquisition hardware including: four built in programmable amplifiers, on-line calculation channels, lesson software, PRO software, laboratory manuals, and transducers and electrodes, starts at less than most other data acquisition systems and a lot less than purchasing a chart recorder, amplifiers and transducers.
