Activity and Caloric Expenditure, Now with
Step-Count.
(Actual Size: 28 x 27 x 10 mm)
Actical Physical Activity Monitors provide an objective, quantifiable
measure of Physical Activity and Energy (Caloric) Expenditure for your
research. Activity level thresholds (cut point) determination and
quantitative activity analysis are recognized as being important
components of weight management and sports medicine research. They can
be a valuable measurement tool in any area where exercise plays a
critical role.
Actical is a physical activity monitor based on our proven Actiwatch
actigraphy-based data logging system, using an omnidirectional
accelerometer. Digital integration data acquisition incorporates
intensity of movement into the Activity Count total.
Actical Applications:
-
Weight Management
-
Nutrition
-
Exercise
-
Rehabilitation
-
All General Physical Activity Monitoring Requirements
The Actical Advantage
-
Waterproof - bathe, shower and swim with no fear of data loss or
damage
-
Digital Integration - Accurately incorporates both intensity and
duration
-
Omnidirectional sensor
-
Compact size & weight - 28mm x 27mm x 10mm and only 17
grams!
-
64k memory (45 days using one minute epoch)
-
6-month battery life (user-replaceable)
-
Repeated calibrations not required
-
Built-in event marker
"The Mini Mitter [Actiwatch] not only has the advantage of
being omnidirectional, but it is also smaller [than the other product
used in the study] and waterproof."

Calibration of Physical Activity Monitors in Children. Obesity Research

Actical Energy (Caloric) Expenditure Analysis
Actical software includes Active Energy Expenditure (AEE) and
Metabolic Equivalent (MET) Algorithms based on carefully validated
studies in which a wide range of subjects performed a variety of tests
ranging from keyboarding to treadmill running. Actical's activity count
data is converted into minute-by-minute energy expenditure. This is used
to calculate daily, hourly, and custom interval caloric consumption.

prediction algorithms in adults using the Actical electronic activity
monitor. Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise 35(5):S285, 2003.

Advanced Energy Expenditure Analysis

AEE vs MET Comparison:
Active energy expenditure (top - does
not include resting metabolic rate) and metabolic equivalent (bottom -
includes resting metabolic rate) graphs for a participant in the 2003
New York City Marathon. Guess which day she ran in the marathon?

Actical Activity Analysis
Collected activity data can be evaluated in many ways. Multiple-day
actograms, actogram zoom, and actogram average functions provide
graphical and statistical presentation of activity count data. Activity
data can be exported in an ASCII data format for additional analysis.
Example Actical Activity Screen

This is an expanded actogram showing
the activity levels from a participant during the 2003 New York City
Marathon. Note the high levels of sustained activity.
Actical Software gives you a number of ways to look at your data.
Here are just a few of them:
-
Total Energy Expenditure (kcals)
-
Average Energy Expenditure (kcals per minute)
-
Total Activity (counts) * Average Activity (counts per minute)
-
Time Interval Duration (minutes)
-
Total Energy Expenditure Within Each Activity Range (kcals)
-
Sedentary, Light, Moderate, and Vigorous activity ranges
-
Average Energy Expenditure Within Each Activity Range (kcals per
minute)
-
Accumulated Time Within Each Activity Range (minutes)
-
Ratio of Accumulated Time Within Each Activity Range to Total
Time (%)
Statistics are computed in the software for:
-
The whole data set
-
Each day
-
Each hour of each day
-
Custom time intervals selected by the user

ActiReader™
ActiReader directs communication between your PC and Actical. It is
connected to the PC via an RS-232 serial cable, and communicates with
Actical using a short range telemetric link.
